Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady The Musical

Last Saturday Carpet Head and I had the chance to finally watch a musical together and it just happened to be an extremely awesome one: Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady The Musical (roughly translates to ‘How I became Leading Lady’). Our friends Tisha, JB and Che were sponsors of that Saturday’s show so there were a few of us from our ultimate team who watched.

Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady is an original musical written and created by Carlo Vergara in collaboration with composer and lyricist Vincent De Jesus, and brought to life by Dalanghita Productions.

The  story revolves around Mely who struggles to support her mother, who is unable to work, and her younger sister Viva, who is deemed irresponsible and lazy. One day, Mely is hired as a house help by Fuwerza Filipinas, the corporate-sponsored group of English-speaking superheroes who have little interaction with the public apart from saving them from evil robots and what not. At the same time, Viva, who happens to have big dreams that no one really knows about or believes in, is recruited by a “government agency” for a prestigious job that involves supposedly saving her sister from the superheroes who are supposedly pretending to be something they’re not. This “agency” turns out to be Kayumanggilas, the all-Filipino group of supervillains who get their temporary powers by downing a shot of Chemical Q and want to get rid of Fuwerza Filipinas and take their place as the superheroes.

I don’t want to give anything else away, but that’s just the gist. I mean, there are social, cultural and political themes running through the entire thing, and there’s also a love story – a love triangle, of course – but, personally, I really like the beautiful storyline about the sisters.

Though the themes are quite serious, the musical is witty, sarcastic, hilarious, relatable, and just really entertaining. The songs are nothing but amazing (much respect to the composer and lyricist), the choreography fun, and the actors are pretty darn good, too.
