Review: Faith and Moonlight by Mark Gelineau and Joe King

Today we have another book from author duo Gelineau and King! This time it’s a young adult novella called Faith and Moonlight, the fourth book in their Echoes of the Ascended series. I really am a big fan of their work and I am so stoked to feature this book on the blog on its release day!

Read on to know more about the book and check out my review. ;)

Roan and Kay are orphans.

Kay knows that’s all they’ll ever be, but Roan dreams of greater things.

Roan and Kay have one chance to enter the School of Faith, home to gifted warriors learning to channel the spirits around them.

It is an impossible dream, but they’ll never give it up.

They have each other.

And they go to where students are taught every day: Do the impossible. Never look back.

Emotional, powerful and speaks of exciting things to come

When the orphanage that Roan and Kay called home burns down, they are left no choice but to find another place and another way. They promise to always stay together and decide to try their chances at the School of Faith, where the gifted learn and train to become Razors or warriors who harness the power of those who have come before them. They have one month to prove they belong in the school. For Roan, it all comes naturally, but Kay struggles and is soon losing hope. Will they still stay together or are they destined for different things?

This is another fantasy that I really enjoyed reading. It’s full of emotion but not at all heavy and there’s always that feeling of magic and power running through the scenes. Roan and Kay are likeable and relatable characters in their own way. You can really feel Roan’s desire and dream to be something more and you can also feel Kay’s frustration and struggle. And underneath all that you can practically touch how much they care about each other.

I love the concept of the Schools and the magic system and in this novella you start to understand a few things about the Ascended and the history and all the magic permeating everywhere. The ‘ending’ of this novella is something that definitely makes things very interesting and exciting. I can’t wait to find out what happens next in Roan’s and Kay’s story.

Note: I received a review copy of this book from the authors. All opinions and views expressed here are my own.

The Echoes of the Ascended

Faith and Moonlight is only one of the four mini-series in the Echoes of the Ascended series of series which follows five orphans from the fantastical world of Aedaron. The Reaper series follows the story of Elinor; Rend the Dark follows the story of Ferran; Best Left in the Shadows follows the story of Alys; and Faith and Moonlight follows the story of Roan and Kay.

Read an excerpt

She took a deep breath and let it out, trying to focus, but her eyes darted from one new wonder to the next. Yet despite all the new sights, it was Roan she kept coming back to.

There was a tension and excitement in his bearing, and quickness in his step. His long, lean form seemed drawn tight like a bowstring, not with anxiety, but with a thrilling anticipation. His blue eyes seemed to take in everything.

Roan had always been different. Kay and the other orphans had grown up on the dreams and stories of the old legends, playing the parts of the great heroes. But nobody ever thought they could really become like them when they grew older. Except Roan.

He made her believe they were destined for great things. He made her believe anything was possible, so long as they were together. His hope was fearless and she was grateful for that. Loved him for that.

“There it is,” Roan said, his voice breathless.

In the distance, a shining white edifice towered above the Crucis District. Sunlight played off the white marble of a massive central dome, making the statues seem to sway and move as if they were alive.

They were finally here. The School of Faith.
