Finally found a good use for my oh-so-too-pretty-to-write-on Starbucks planner.

I have decided to start a freelance journal. What exactly is a freelance journal, you ask?

I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I want to start some sort of journal this year and that I promise to keep writing and get my freelance career going. Well, some of the action plans for those goals include finally starting (and completing) that 30 day creative writing challenge (I was supposed to do this last year!) and starting a freelance journal.

I got this idea from Mri Dukhullar’s blog, one of my favorite freelance writing blogs. Her blog is so useful and inspiring. Anyway, a freelance journal is sort of a way to keep track of what you do everyday. You write down everything you do and include notes like feedback from your boss or the number of revisions you had to do. The idea is that by looking at your daily activities, you’ll eventually see some kind of pattern with the way you work. Maybe you’ll see what makes up most of your time and then you can adjust as needed.

So I made my first entry on Feb 1st and I’m hoping to keep this up until the end of the year. Hopefully this will help me manage my time better. Or something. It’s actually nice to use pen and paper again.

You think this is a good idea? ;)

Spotlight & Giveaway: The Boon by Eugene Uttley

Today we’re featuring The Boon: Thoughts of a Schizophrenic in Remission by Eugene Uttley.

Read more about the book and find out how you can enter his ongoing giveaway for a chance to win a $30 Barnes & Noble gift card and 10 copies of The Boon!

About the book

Accompany Eugene Uttley on a mythological “hero’s journey” to another world and back again, and join him as he articulates the prize that he won there — The Ultimate Boon.

Through his struggles in coping with schizophrenia, Uttley has come to know what he wants. Now he just needs to figure out how to get it.

This experimental open letter includes original and appropriated prose, poetry, song, prayer… memoir, travelogue, sketches of Uttley’s present-day life, and literary exegesis. Its many sources and topics are ranging, but circle always back to the overarching theme of recovery from mental illness through better knowledge of self and becoming more whole, a complex process both mental and spiritual, which entails increasing awareness of connectedness to the greater whole, the infinite.

A partial bucket list

Since we’re been talking about bucket lists all week, I thought I should start writing down my own. Many of the things are inspired by the book A Writer’s Bucket List and most of the things on my list are more like “what I want to accomplish this year” kind of stuff than “things I want to do before I die” kind of stuff, but what the heck. A list is a list and I think it’s always healthy to have a list of small goals or plans for any time and any where.

This is just a partial list, okay? :)

Review & Giveaway: A Writer’s Bucket List by Dana Sitar

I don’t remember now how I came across author Dana Sitar’s blog DIY Writing, but I found myself there and started reading about how she upped and went away without any solid plan and became a freelance writer. I really liked her blog and when I read about A Writer’s Bucket List, I jumped at the chance to be one of the advanced reviewers.

Reading this book was perfect timing for me. It really put things in perspective. Like what I said in my new year post, when I decided to do  the freelance writing thing full time, I wasn’t exactly sure what kind of writer or freelancer I wanted to be. Did I want to focus on article or blog writing? Copywriting? Book reviewing? Editing and proofreading? Or did I want to be in author PR and marketing? Did I want to be a novelist? This book helped me realize that maybe I didn’t have to label myself as one thing.

Cover Reveal: REDEYE by Michael Shean

This sinister cover, my friend, is none other than that of REDEYE, the second installment of author Michael Shean’s The Wonderland Cycle. I haven’t read the first book, Shadow of a Dead Star, but I’ve read and reviewed the author’s other book Bone Wires.

The Wonderland Cycle
is set in the same world where Bone Wires took place so I’m pretty sure these are cool reads, too. Check out the book summaries below!
