I’m at an all-time low when it comes to reading. It’s already September and I’ve only finished a total of four books so far. That’s a bit sad, right? It feels really sad. Let me give you a rundown though.

Blog Tour and Giveaway: Aries’ Red Sky by James Young
Today is for sci fi! Well, on this blog anyway. I’m participating in the blog tour for Aries’ Red Sky by author James Young. I’ve read one of his books, An Unproven Concept, last year and it was pretty interesting. I’m sure this one will be, too.

Time for a Mid-Year Check!
I’ve been pretty chill about my goals this year because I didn’t want to put too much pressure on myself. I think I became too chill about it though. I had about nine things on my 2018 list but I can honestly say I’ve only been somewhat true to three* of them. And I say “somewhat true” because I feel like I’m only hitting the minimum with those three goals.
When June came around I was feeling pretty blah about doing a mid-year check because, you know, I’ve nothing much to show. Then I joined the Respark Challenge by Arriane Serafico of The Purposeful Creative. Respark was a 5-day challenge to help participants get the spark back into their goals and motivation. I did all challenges and though I did feel like they helped a lot, I still haven’t done anything more to really jumpstart my goals again. Insert huge sigh here. Yup, looks like I’m still pretty chill about my goals. Hah.
So I thought, maybe doing this mid-year check will help turn the spark into a bit of a flame, yeah? You know, accountability and all that. Bahaha. Anyway, here goes.
The usual things on my 2018 list
Continue with my knee strengthening exercises – Yeahhh, nope. Didn’t do a single workout, but I need to start this up right away. Gah.
*Practice #yogaeverydamnday – I haven’t been able to practice everyday, but I’ve been attending classes at least three times a week so that’s a good thing, methinks. I’m still aiming to start a home practice, so I don’t have to always rely on classes at the studio.
*Eat healthy – I’ve really been trying my best to do this, so I’m counting this as part of my “somewhat” wins. I have to keep working on it, of course, and be even more mindful of what I eat.
Practice daily meditation and learn more about self-healing – Haven’t really done this. I downloaded an app some months back but never even opened it. I’d like to think I meditated a few times before or during yoga, but I’d really like to actually spend a few minutes each day to meditate. And about the learning about self-healing part – I know I have to read up on it but I’ve been in a serious reading slump for a while now and have a hard time picking up any book.
My personal projects
Read two books a month – I’ve read a total of two new books! Yay. LOL. I’ve also re-read three favorites in the hopes of getting out of my reading slump. I honestly have no idea how I’ll do with my reading challenge this year. *cry*
Finish a new #100dayproject – Haven’t started a new project but I already have a topic in mind. I just need to flesh it out some more cos I’m still not sure what my daily task would be with this new topic. It’s geared towards NaNoWriMo, which I’ve decided to join again.
*Start a gratitude journal – I’ve been doing this! Fine, I miss a few days or weeks sometimes but I do write down stuff whenever I remember. It’s a nice thing actually. Helps me remember what to be grateful for when I’m feeling stressed or down about something.
Restart my language lessons on Duolingo – I’ve completely neglected my Spanish and Japanese lessons! Hah. I may need to start over sometime this month. Or next month. Bahaha.
Finally learn how to use my sewing machine – My list of sewing projects is growing and I still haven’t attempted to study my “new” old sewing machine. Hahahuhu.
And there you have it.
I realize these are somewhat sad updates on the first half of the year, but at least I have my three “somewhat” wins, right? I know I just have to do better. I know I can hit more of these if I would just get off my ass to try. Hah. Reality is, I have no discipline and motivation to manage my time better so that I can do more. I really just have to do better.
How’s your year so far?
T-Shirt Thursday! Because it’s cool and it’s fun!
It’s been a while since my last T-Shirt Thursday, yeah? Truth be told, I haven’t been browsing my favorite graphic tee sites for a while and I really don’t buy tees that often, anyway, because I always tell myself that I need more formal-ish type tops, but then again I’ve also been trying to stop myself from buying any more clothes. I don’t need more clothes, seriously. I have too many things I don’t use – shirts, frisbee jerseys, singlets, dresses, shorts, etc. I seriously need to purge my closet again AND give away or donate the stuff I don’t use anymore. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but we (my sis and me, I mean) still have the old stuff we discarded in our last purge, which was a couple of years ago! They’re all still up in storage. MY GAHD.
ANYWAY, I’m rambling. I know I have stuff to do with my current stuff and my old stuff and I really should do something about all that this week or this month, BUT, for today, let me just share the joy I get from seeing graphic tees with seriously cool and fun art. That’s really what I love about these, anyway – the cute and awesome art! Check out the ones that caught my eye this week.

The Practical Magic Starter Deck
I know next to nothing about tarot, but I’ve been interested in it for a while now. I have a few ebooks (that I haven’t read), I’m subscribed to a few blogs and I follow some pretty cool folks on Instagram. I like the practical approach that most of these tarot readers and practitioners take and I also like the whole creative aspect of it all. I mean, have you seen the art on some of these tarot and oracle decks? So beautiful they make me truly pause in awe.
So, I’m very interested in tarot, but I haven’t really taken the time to learn more about it – which isn’t a surprise because I haven’t been taking the time to do anything about my interests these days (yeah, that’s another story). I mean, I bought a deck once, the classic Rider-Waite Smith because I heard every newbie should know it and I tried to study the cards but just couldn’t connect with it. I stopped trying and left that deck alone. I wasn’t sure when I was going to pick it up again and actually try to learn tarot.
Then one of my favorite sources of anything tarot-related, Practical Magic, came out with her collage starter deck. I’m kind of a big fan and tend to *heart* all her IG posts (stalker alert), so I really considered purchasing the deck. I took a long time deciding though because at first I wasn’t really called by it, which is funny cos I’ve always considered myself a “collage girl” (translation: I can’t draw or sketch to save my life so collages were the closest I came to creating ahhhrt). Anyway, so I finally decided, what the heck Imma get this deck. And, you know what? I’m so glad I did because so far it’s been surprising me a lot in a really cool way.
I ordered the deck about two weeks ago, on a Tuesday, and it arrived the next day. I guess it helped that we live in the same city. Hah. Anyway, it came nicely packaged in a brown envelope tied with string. It also came with a cute canvas pouch, which I want to replicate for my other deck one of these days (but probably won’t cos I’m lazy), a postcard with a lovely message and a mini zine (a mini guide of sorts).

I didn’t play with it that day because I had stuff to do, but the next day I decided to give it a quick look-see and try my hand at a mini reading for myself. Well, I wanted to do a card for the day sort of thing. I took out the deck and looked at each card briefly. Each card is unique and colorful, contains interesting modern imagery, and is pretty cool in that collage-y way, which I like. As I mentioned at the start, I don’t know much about tarot, so I couldn’t tell you how the images relate to the traditional meanings, but they supposedly do. Each card also includes catchphrases, which are pretty helpful for clueless noobs like me.
After I went through all the cards, I shuffled them carefully – they are easy to shuffle, by the way, because they have a nice glossy feel and are adequately sized – and I made my very first pull from my new PM deck.
Holy magical powers, Batman.
My very first pull? Incidentally the very first serious one I’ve ever done in my life, and by serious I mean heart-into-it, focused-my-mind serious. It was really on point. The card I pulled was the 8 of Pentacles, which had the tagline “Learn More. Practice More.”

I thought it was on point because, for this pull, I was thinking about writing and how I haven’t been writing for myself for a long time and I was thinking about what I should do to get back into it. I was also thinking about my many obsessions (like tarot) and that I haven’t really been doing much to learn more about them. This card pretty much just told me what I already know deep down. That I need to work on these things. Learn more, practice more. You can’t get any clearer than that, right? I love that this was the card that turned up for me because it was just the simple truth that I needed to acknowledge at that time.
A few days later I decided to do another pull and the card that turned up was also something I could relate to what I was thinking about at that moment. The whole thing was just really really cool. I think the straightforward mini guide and the taglines on each card helped a lot and made it easy for me to “interpret” the card for myself.
After these initial experiences with the PM deck, I’m feeling pretty good about things. About just giving in to letting the simple magic of recognizing the simple truth help me. Does that make sense? I don’t know if I’ll be able to explore and use this deck as often as I want to, but, hey, it got me writing on this blog again, so who knows? Maybe it’s just what I need to help me get out of my writing and reading rut. Maybe I’ll start learning more about tarot or maybe I won’t. I really don’t know, but I’m glad I bought this deck.

My favorite mostly-free stock photography sources
(Updated January 24, 2023)
I always try to use my own photos on my blog, but I’m not great at taking awesome pictures, so sometimes I refer to my favorite sources of stock photography when I need a gorgeous image for a blog post.
I’m pretty happy about these sites so I wanted to share it. Check out my favorite sources of mostly-free photos.
Her Creative Studio
I discovered Her Creative Studio through Creative Market. One of their styled stock photography bundle was free for the week and I decided to check it out. The featured image of this post is from that bundle. If you’re not ready to be a paid member, you can sign up for their newsletter and get a free photo every month.
Styled Stock Society
Styled Stock Society is also a paid membership, but has free resources for email subscribers. They’re really good images and I’ve used some of them for my Instagram posts.
Death To Stock
I can’t remember when I first found out about Death to Stock, but it was from a newsletter by one of the writers/artists I subscribe to. Can’t remember now who it was. I immediately visited their website and have been a subscriber of their free monthly photos ever since. I love that their free monthly packs have a theme and the photos are always top notch. If you want access to more photos aside from the free monthly, you can sign up for their premium membership.
Unsplash
I discovered Unsplash through an old writing gig. I rarely visit the site now but I’m still subscribed to their newsletter. I just like to keep myself updated with their new stuff, in case something catches my eye.
And that’s it. Haha.
