Girl Crush Friday: Gina Rodriguez from Jane the Virgin
Yup, I’ve a new girl crush. I’ve been girl-crushing on Gina Rodriguez (Twitter, Instagram) ever since I started watching her TV series Jane the Virgin late last year. I’m actually a couple of episodes behind since I haven’t kept up with the series after the mid-season break, but I’m gonna catch up soon, you can be sure about that. It’s just a really fun and entertaining show.
If you’re not familiar with Jane the Virgin, the story is basically like this: Jane, who is in her early 20’s, is a virgin and she’s pregnant. Not by a miracle, of course (Gasp! Inmaculada!) but by accident – she was mistakenly artificially inseminated by the gynecologist who was filling in for Jane’s actual doctor and was feeling out of sorts after she caught her wife cheating, and who happens to be the sister of the baby daddy and the secret ex-lover of their father’s hot wife. Are you still with me? Hah.
The stack of books on my header photo is a stack of lies.
Today I would like to ramble about reading. Rather, about NOT reading any damn book at the moment. I apologize in advance for the utter uselessness of this post.
With the exception of The Hunger Games, I have not read any of the books featured on my blog header image. WTF, right? Lies, all lies! Haha. Well, these books have been on my ‘to be read’ shelf for a while now. In case the titles aren’t really visible, these are what’s on that stack of lies books:
Apartment Stuff: Spicing up a whole lotta wall space
We interrupt this program to present a feature post about prettifying empty wall spaces with cutesy artsy sticker things!
We have a lot of empty walls in our apartment. Most of the time I kinda like it that way – I love white space! – but I think we’ll be putting up a few photos and what not in some of the spaces soon. We have yet to have some of our wedding photos printed up and framed. I know, it’s been forever, but it’s something we plan to do before the year ends. It would be nice to have a few family photos on our walls, especially on the wall near the living room. I vant a typical Filipino wall filled with photos!
Books to Movies Giveaway Hop
To be honest, I wasn’t thinking about this giveaway hop when I decided to do Books to Movies for 31 Days because I signed up for this weeks ago, but when I realized that I also have this giveaway hop on the same month, it pleased me immensely. What’s the word for it? Synchronicity? :)
Anyway, I’m not strictly a “the book is better than the movie” girl. There were times when I liked the book more than the film adaptation, and there were also times when I enjoyed the movie more than the book. More often than not, it has to do with which one I had the pleasure of enjoying first. Sometimes I read the book first and the movie just didn’t meet expectations. Other times I saw the movie first, enjoyed it, but didn’t get the same enjoyment from the book. There are also instances when I feel the same way about both. Take Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter for example – I liked both the book versions and the movies. I mean, c’mon, they were all awesome.
Anyway, I’m always excited about books that get turned into movies, especially when it’s fantasy or science fiction. That’s why I joined this Books to Movies Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mary from BookHounds and I Am A Reader, Not A Writer. This giveaway hop runs from October 2nd to the 10th.
About these 10 books lists
I’m sure you’ve seen this “10 books” chain post thing on Facebook. The rule goes something like, “HOW TO PLAY: List 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take more than a few minutes, and don’t think too hard. It’s not about the “right book” or great works of literature, just ones that have affected you in some way. Doesn’t have to be in order. Then tag 10 friends or more and me so I can see your list.”
I’ve seen friends post their lists – some of the lists are quite impressive, too – and I’ve been tagged once, but I didn’t want to post a list on Facebook because, quite frankly, it makes me feel embarrassed that I haven’t read any of the “greats.” I’m supposed to know these things, but I can’t say I’ve read anything written by the great literary fiction authors of our time or most of the classics while you’re at it. I’m not much of a lit fiction reader and I haven’t read most of the popular ones (even though I have copies of some). The number of classic novels I’ve read? I can count them off with my fingers. GAH. I am terrible.
How to beat the heat while working at home
DAMN it’s getting hot in here. And by that, I really mean, holy crap summer’s here to toast us all.
Maybe it’s because we went to Boracay island early in March that I feel like summer has been going on forever. I’ve forgotten that the season of beaches and bikinis only “officially” starts around this time. Luckily, the maddening heat reminded me that school’s out and it’s time to bask (or burn) in the scorching heat and revel in the “YAY no more school therefore there are less cars on the road YAY” traffic. I don’t drive, but, hey, I’m a passenger and sucky traffic gets to me, too.
Things I’m thankful for and loving today
Because it’s Friday and I’m stalling before I need to get to work.
1. Kat Dennings and Eric Andre from 2 Broke Girls
Kat Dennings – I’ve had a girl crush on since I discovered her gorgeous blog header some years back. I know, I’m weird, but that header photo is gold. Plus she’s really funny on 2 Broke Girls. Eric Andre – I just discovered him on that show, too, and he is frickin’ hilarious. I’m loving them both right now.
Check out this clip from the show. A little background – SPOILER ALERT! – Deke (Eric Andre) is trying to win back Max (Kat Dennings) who doesn’t want to date him anymore because he turned out to be a rich dude.
So funny. I haven’t seen any of the episodes from this season.
