Review of The Grimoire: Lichgates by S.M. Boyce

About the book

The Grimoire is an old magical book that answers only to one person and it has chosen Kara Magari, who accidentally stumbles across it during a hike. When she opens the book, she suddenly finds herself in Ourea, a beautiful yet terrifying world  full of creatures that all want the book and its secrets. Kara suddenly becomes a most wanted person in this hidden magical world. By chance she meets Braeden Drakonin, a man who’s hiding something and has been looking for the book all his life. He can’t believe his luck when Kara comes into his life. Braeden only has one question for the Grimoire–one question that can fix everything in his broken life–and he’s not letting Kara out of his sight until he gets an answer. For Kara, there’s no way out of Ourea and she has no choice but to trust the Grimoire. — Get The Grimoire on Amazon.

I first found out about this book when I was browsing the giveaway page on Goodreads (awesome way to find book giveaways, by the way!). I saw the book and read the blurb. It had me at book and magic! I was feeling all book-blogger-ish and was interested in a book about a book. Plus it had magic stuff. And the title itself challenged me. Gree-mo-war? Grim-war? Gree-mee? Pronunciation challenge! :D

Quick review: Blink (a novelette by Lloyd Poast)

Time to play review catch up! Meaning, my posts in the next following days are all book reviews! Yay. And today we shall start with a little novelette.

Blink by Lloyd Poast is a short novel so this is going to be a short review! I’d like to thank the author for the opportunity to review his novelette and I also apologize for taking forever in posting this review.

In Blink, we read about Lance who had quite an adventure when he decided to enter the “scary” woods. Nobody ever goes to the woods, but Lance just couldn’t resist following the magical purple top hat that seemed to be calling to him. In less than twenty pages, we read about the interesting characters he met and the magical otherworld that he found himself in. Blink is a fast-paced fantasy ride. It feels like a rollercoaster ride–fast, confusing, amusing, fun. I think it’s perfect as a short story. If you want a quick fantasy fix, this is something you can consider.

Crime and Magic: The Day of First Sun by Sheryl Steines

Remember the world of Harry Potter? You know, the world of magic, wizards, muggles, wizard government, flying broomsticks, good and evil? Of course you do!

If you miss ‘ole Harry’s world and have already read your HP books to pieces, here’s an easy alternative, The Day of First Sun. It has all those fun things, too. This book feels like it was set in Harry Potter’s world, only it isn’t about Harry or any of his friends or any of the other characters we know. Obviously it’s about other people, wizards and non-magical folks alike, and non-human creatures, too. Oh, and it’s set in the U.S. not the U.K. so some of yous can give those British accents in your head a rest.  Well, you know, if you want.

Random book: The Golden Acorn by Catherine Cooper

I am a sucker for free Kindle books on Amazon.  Every once in a while I check the top 100 free books list and download the ones that seem interesting to me.  Most of the books I download fall in the young readers and fantasy categories.   I download too many of these books, but I have only read a few of them. Some of the ones I read were so-so, but one or two were actually good.  The Golden Acorn by Catherine Cooper was one of the nice ones.

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Fire and Ice, Book 1)

Finally finished the book. Yayyy. Thank the heavens. Goodness, took me forever to get through that one. It was probably because I watched the HBO series first before I started on the book and I already knew what was going to happen so I guess I wasn’t really feeling the suspense and excitement of not knowing the twists and turns of the story and.. and.. SPLORT!

HNY + Book Watch: The Son of Neptune (Rick Riordan)

HNY! Happy New Year! May the year of the water dragon be great for all of us! :P

To celebrate, I read a book. Hah. Yay for geeks. Yay I finished my first book for the year. See? I’m still reading, folks! Okay, granted this is a book for young teens and is really easy to read, I think it still counts as good reading. Rick Riordan makes pretty good stories.
